One day in July 2010, while on holiday, I happened upon a yard sale in Undersvik, Hälsingland, Sweden. I often stop at yard sales in search for interesting photography related items. This time I was lucky to find a 17 metre roll of Ilford film. The can was dated Sept. 1960 – the roll was about to turn 50 later that same year. I had no idea how the film had been stored through all those years, but I bought the film, exchanged a few words with the owner of the place, who turned out to be jazz musician Kari Sjöstrand. I told her I'll let her know if I managed to get some images from the film. She gave me her business card and I drove on. On my way home, a concept started to form in my head; I wanted to shoot the roll of film during September of 2010, on the film's 50th birthdays, using a camera of the same age. The theme of the images would be jazz tunes released on albums in 1960. After all, jazz music was what had me and Kari begin conversation in the first place. At a thrift shop in Stockholm a Voigtländer Vito turned up, a camera which was released in its first incarnation in 1960. I purchased that camera, looked up a number of jazz song titles that I liked and I carried the camera and the list of songs with me during all of September. The result was the 50/50 Rebop exhibition, which opened at Karisma galleri & Trädgårdsscen in Undersvik a year later, in July 2011. Kari Sjöstrand invited Brus Trio, who came all the way from Stockholm to Undersvik and gave a wonderful outdoor 60's jazz concert at the opening of the exhibition. ....... |
